| Royals mourn Dewar's passing The Queen paid tribute to the First Minister Both the Queen and Prince Charles have paid warm tribute to Donald Dewar after his death following a brain haemorrhage. Prince Charles spoke of his memories of Mr Dewar after a tour of the Glasgow Homeopathic Hospital, which is less than a mile from Mr Dewar's sandstone townhouse in the heart of the city's west end. The prince said he would remember the late first minister as "a remarkably energetic and determined person who clearly dedicated his entire life to the needs and concerns of Scotland and Scotland's people". He added: "He clearly loved the country. I will never get over his boundless energy and enthusiasm.
"I am deeply saddened by this news and I want to use this occasion to offer my heartfelt sympathy to his family and all his friends who I know will greatly miss him." The prince said the Queen was "devastated" by Mr Dewar's death. He added: "She was very proud of her first minister. "I know Her Majesty will be greatly devastated by this tragedy and it is a tragedy because I know how much he was committed to the whole process of devolution and how he carried it forward. 'Shocked and saddened' "He was committed to Scotland and had such a marvellous sense of duty." The Queen paid tribute to Mr Dewar and also sent a personal message to his family. Buckingham Palace said: "The Queen and all members of the Royal Family are shocked and deeply saddened by the news of Donald Dewar's death. "His passion for Scotland and all things Scottish was renowned and his contribution to the historic process of devolution in recent years has been immense. "As her first minister in Scotland, Her Majesty has valued greatly his wise counsel and knows how much he will be missed in Scotland and wider afield." |
