A Strathclyde Police spokeswoman said the 22-year-old, who was sent off during the Sunday derby, suffered an eye injury during the fracas. In all, 62 arrests were made and two serious incidents of violence followed the high-scoring match at Celtic Park in the east end of Glasgow. Fourteen people were arrested at the game and a further 48 afterwards. In the main they were charged with minor disorder offences and a number were expected to appear in court on Monday.
The footballer's friend was then set upon by the group and the Rangers player became involved in a scuffle. Ferguson, a Scottish international, was injured but did not require hospital treatment. His friend, who has not been named, was taken to Monklands Hospital, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, where he was released after treatment for minor injuries. The police spokeswoman added: "No complaint has been made by Mr Ferguson or his companion over the incident." Earlier in the day, the midfielder was sent off for a second bookable offence in the first Old Firm match of the season. In the most serious incident of violence following the game a 32-year-old man was struck in the face with an unidentified weapon. In another incident, a man was badly beaten with sticks and golf clubs after being chased by a group of men in the Maryhill area of Glasgow. On Monday he was in Glasgow's Western Infirmary where his condition was described as stable. Police are continuing inquiries into both incidents. The match kicked off at 1300 BST in an attempt to reduce the likelihood of alcohol-related trouble. |
