| Sunday, 13 August, 2000, 10:29 GMT 11:29 UK Film festival 'welcomes Clooney' ![]() Dancing in the Dark, starring singer Bjork, will be shown Holywood movie star George Clooney could be among the celebrities who attends the Edinburgh International Film Festival. The annual event, now in its 54th year, kicks off on Sunday and is expected to attract thousands of visitors from home and abroad. There will be a series of film premiers including the musical Dancing in the Dark, starring Icelandic singer Bjork, Catherine Deneuve and Jean-Marc Barr. As well as Mr Clooney - who stars in the Coen Brothers' O Brother, Where Art Thou? - the Scottish actor Robert Carlyle and members of the bands Idlewild and Belle and Sebastian are expected to attend.
There will also be debates, seminars, panel discussions, training sessions and filmakers' masterclasses to attend. Last year the festival, which bills itself as a showcase for British films, featured 22 new works, of which four were world premieres. The Edinburgh Book Festival will also begin on Sunday with US novelist Norman Mailer and Harry Potter creator JK Rowling among the writers expected to talk about their work. And the Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival, a gathering of TV professionals, is on this month. This year the New York City Ballet and Cleveland Orchestra will perform and Scottish Opera starts a new Ring Cycle of Richard Wagner's operas. In total, 182 performances and events will be staged with 2,500 performers. |
