Sir David Murray has dropped 508 places on the Sunday Times Rich List

Rangers owner Sir David Murray has seen his estimated wealth drop by £390m in the past year, according to the Sunday Times Rich List.

The annual study said the chairman of Murray International Holdings was now worth £110m, down from £500m in 2009.

Sir David was the biggest faller on the rich list, dropping 508 places to 596.

List compiler Philip Beresford said the businessman's major investments in steel, commercial property and football were all hit by the downturn.

But he predicted that Sir David would "bounce back" in future.

According to the Sunday Times, Scottish wealth is generally showing a "healthy" recovery from 2009, with 67 Scots in the top 1,000 against 64 last year.

Top Scots

The 100 richest Scots are worth a total of £16.15bn, up 15.1% on last year's figures of £14.03 bn.

Some 16 of the top 100 richest Scots are drawn from the Aberdeen area, and are largely involved in the oil services sector.

The Sunday Times said Mahdi al-Tajir, the metals, oil and bottled water tycoon, retains his position as Scotland's richest man with a fortune estimated at £1.5bn.

Sir Ian Wood, with estimated wealth of £962m, is Scotland's second richest man.

Harry Potter author JK Rowling holds on to her position at 7th on the Scottish list, with wealth of £519m.

The study estimated the wealth of Dragon's Den entrepreneur Duncan Bannatyne at £320m, while Sir Sean Connery is now said to be worth £80m.

Top of the UK list was steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, whose fortune now stands at £22bn.
