Rape victim goes public

Fife Police have produced posters as part of the hunt
A young woman raped as she walked home in Kirkcaldy has decided partially to give up her anonymity in a new attempt to catch her attacker.

The 19-year-old student will appear on a national crime programme to talk about her ordeal on 29 April.

The victim will be referred to only by her first name.

A Fife Police spokesman said: "This is one very brave girl."

He hoped that her example would encourage anyone who may think they have information about the rape to come forward.

"She will tell a nationwide audience of her initial reaction which wasactually to feel sorry for her assailant althoughshe stresses thatthis sentiment did not last long.

'Scared to be alone'

"She had come to Kirkcaldy, a town even her mother had described as being quiet, friendly and safe, and had been enjoying her studies and time there.

"But the attack has changed her outlook completely and although she still has many friends here she is now scared to be on her own."

Appeals have been made locally and in Yorkshire to Leeds Rhinos and Bradford Bulls rugby league fans who were in the area in advance of acup final at Murrayfield the same weekend as the attack.

The woman was walking home from the town centre in the early hours when she was attacked in a quiet residential street overlooking the harbour area.

Nearly 1,500 DNA tests have been carried out on men known to have been in the area.

The case will be part of the ITV series Britain's Most Wanted.
