All the cities plan fireworks displays
Scotland is being given 620,000 of lottery money to help fund celebrations to mark the end of the year 2000.

The biggest allocations go to Edinburgh and Glasgow, but Aberdeen, Dundee and Inverness also receive a share.

The cash is part of a 6m UK package announced by the Millennium Commissioner, Mo Mowlam.

The main New Year's Eve event in Edinburgh will be part of a five-day festival taking place between 29 December and 2 January.

City allocations
Edinburgh - 250,000
Glasgow - 200,000
Inverness - 60,000
Aberdeen - 60,000
Dundee - 50,000
The Hogmanay celebrations will feature street theatre and live music during the day and early evening, followed by the traditional party centred on Princes Street.

In Glasgow, there will be entertainment for about 100,000 people across three sites, creating a day of celebrations on 31 December.

The new Glasgow Tower will be spotlighted as part of the sound and light event.

There will be six music and dance stages across George Square and in the Merchant City.

The Millennium lights, which will illuminate the River Ness, will be formally opened, with the evening culminating in a fireworks display.

Aberdeen City Council promises a wide range of activities, with street theatre, music and a performance on ice.

There will be a traditional city centre party featuring live music and followed by a fireworks display.

Dundee will also stage an ice show. There will be a Hogmanay cycle ride and street theatre, the evening ending with a fireworks display from Dundee Law, the extinct volcano that dominates the city skyline.
