Climber completes record attempt

The Scottish climber who lost his hands and feet after surviving five days on a peak in the Alps has completed a record climb of Britain's highest mountain.

Jamie Andrew, 30, from Edinburgh, suffered severe frostbite when he was trapped by blizzard conditions near Chamonix in January last year.

He became the first quadruple amputee to scale Ben Nevis at around 1600 BST on Sunday.

The climb was to raise money for charity and to pay tribute to his best friend Jamie Fisher, who lost his life during their ill-fated Alps expedition.

The two men became trapped 13,000ft up on a mountain ridge in freezing conditions in the Mont Blanc area.

Rescuers were unable to get to them for several days and by the time they were eventually plucked off the ridge Jamie Fisher was dead.

Doctors were forced to amputate Mr Andrew's hands and feet which had been damaged beyond repair by the ravages of frostbite.

Equipped with custom-built artificial legs and walking sticks which fit over the stumps of his arms Mr Andrew made an emotional return to Ben Nevis.

The last time he scaled the mountain was in January 1999 when he stood side by side at the peak with Mr Fisher.

He was accompanied by his girlfriend, his father and members of the RAF mountain rescue team.
