The People's Network also aims to make the National Grid For Learning available to the lending centres by 2002. This week, chief librarians across the country will receive details of how the scheme, which has been backed by the New Opportunities Fund, is to be put into action.
Pauline Cameron, Head of the New Opportunities Fund in Scotland said: "The People's Network will greatly enhance locally-based learning and information opportunities, and will position libraries at the heart of the communities they serve." Robert Craig, Director of the Scottish Library and Information Council, described the step as an important new dimension to the future of the service. He said: "The development of the People's Network is a huge boost to Scottish libraries. It will enable us to broaden the range of services we provide to our communities." Deputy Culture Minister, Rhona Brankin, is expected to announce additional funding for the project when she addresses the annual conference of the Scottish Library Association at Peebles. |
