Hundreds of mobile phones have been found in Scotland's prisons |
Hundreds of mobile phones smuggled into prisons have been recovered, it has emerged. The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) has confirmed the number of mobiles seized in jails has risen by almost a third.
Almost 750 mobiles were recovered by prison staff across Scotland, most of them in open prisons where inmates are under lower levels of surveillance.
A total of 177 were found in Castle Huntly and Noranside followed by 122 in Edinburgh's Saughton Prison.
The Prison Officers' Association said prisoners were always looking for ingenious ways to smuggle things into jail, including phones and drugs but they said more investment in technology was needed to prevent it.
The SPS said there were more mobile phones in society and they were becoming smaller, two reasons why more were being smuggled in successfully.
