Scottish venues will host athletes training for London 2012
The soon to be constructed Ravenscraig sports centre is among 28 Scottish venues earmarked to host Olympic athletes training for London 2012.

Strathclyde Country Park and Wishaw Sports Centre were also included in a guide for athletes planning to compete in the Games.

There were 1,000 applications for a place in the brochure which will be handed out in Beijing in August.

Sports Minister Stewart Maxwell welcomed the announcement.

Speaking at the National Rowing Academy in Strathclyde Country Park, he said: "I am pleased that a large number of the Scottish facilities which applied have made it into the pre-Games training camp guide, as we are determined that Scotland benefits as much as possible."

Target-shooting

Scotland's national sports agency, Sportscotland, co-ordinated applications from Scottish sports facilities that wanted to be part of the guide.

More than 600 facilities will appear in the brochure which will be circulated to all National Olympic Committees and National Paralympic Committees. These organisations will then decide where they base themselves or where to send individual athletes to prepare and acclimatise for London 2012.

Other Scottish venues included the target-shooting centre at Denwood in Aberdeen, the Scottish National Equestrian Centre in West Lothian and the Pitreavie Athletics Centre in Fife.

Some of Scotland's university sports facilities could also be used.

Heriot-Watt, Dundee, Robert Gordons and Stirling universities were all selected for the guide.
