The state of Scottish broadcasting was discussed at the conference |
The state of Scotland's broadcasting and housing sectors were two matters up for discussion on the second day of the Scottish Lib Dems conference. Party members gave their views on news and sports coverage during a debate before a panel of broadcasters.
The conference also called for councils to consider selling surplus public sector land below market value for affordable housing developments.
It also asked for at least 27,000 new affordable homes by April 2011.
During the Saturday morning debate on the state of the country's broadcasting industry, accusations were made that Scotland was being snubbed when it came to making network flagship programmes.
The attack came from broadcaster Lesley Riddoch, who was a panellist at the conference in Aviemore.
Ms Riddoch argued that the changed landscape of devolution had made it more difficult to interest London producers in material from Scotland that was not quirky or "caricature."
"I think there is a big problem now about broadcasting in the UK because of devolution," she said.
Talking of the difficulty of pitching ideas for radio to London executives, she added: "You can see through their eyes that this just doesn't cut it.
"You find yourself constantly doing what seem to be perhaps the marginal stories from Scotland - that kind of almost caricature of what Scotland is about, because the main bread and butter of what we are about now doesn't quite apply to everybody else."

In a later debate on housing, the conference made its call for public and local authorities to consider the land sell-offs to make way for more affordable housing.
The call came in a detailed motion which also urged the Scottish Government to commit to at least 27,000 new affordable homes by April 2011.
Lib Dem MP Danny Alexander told the conference the surplus land call should apply not just to Scottish-based public bodies but to UK bodies with land in Scotland, like British Waterways and the Ministry of Defence.
The conference called for more affordable housing |
The MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey said: "If they had this requirement, we could release quite a lot of land quite quickly to develop affordable housing."
During the day's events, Alistair Carmichael, the Lib Dem MP for Orkney, predicted that his party would win five Scottish seats from Labour in Scotland at the next Westminster election.
In his speech to the gathering, he also took a swipe at Labour leader Wendy Alexander, whom he said had been a fiery left-winger as a young student.
He said: "From Das Kapital to The Very Hungry Caterpillar - doesn't it tell you all you need to know about New Labour?"
Predicting the Lib Dems would win Edinburgh South, Glasgow North, Aberdeen South, East Lothian, and Edinburgh North, Mr Carmichael added: "For the first time in my adult life, the Labour party has lost its stranglehold in Scotland."
