Charlie Gordon: Full statement
Labour MSP Charlie Gordon has said he plans to remain as an MSP despite his role in the donations controversy.

He has admitted to blunders over a 950 donation from a businessman to the leadership campaign of Wendy Alexander.

Here is Mr Gordon's full statement.

Last week I realised that I had unwittingly made serious errors in connection with two political donations of under 1,000.

I immediately alerted and apologised to those whom I had unwittingly misled and I resigned as shadow transport minister.

I also reported the matter to the Electoral Commission and they are now in dialogue with me; so I can't say any more about the matter meantime.

But there are other things that I do want to address.

Charlie Gordon said he would stay on as an MSP

Remarks have been made about my conduct during my 18 years as a councillor in local government;

Not about my years spent helping to build Britain's second largest transport network.

Not about my 6 years as leader of Glasgow City Council, when we created 60,000 jobs, built 40 new schools, levered in 2bn to 3bn into regenerating the Clyde Waterfront, facilitated the largest social housing investment plan in Britain and pioneered free breakfast in all primary schools.

And not about the thousands of individual constituents I've helped over the years.

Instead snide innuendos about gifts and hospitality, business trips and planning consents to do with gifts, hospitality, business trips and planning consent.

All such matters are subject to strict rules.

Gifts and hospitality cannot always be refused for fear of giving offence; for example a person opening a new school can hardly refuse a modest memento from its pupils.

Work hard

Business trips must be authorised by councils and, as with gifts and hospitality, are recorded, as appropriate.

Planning reports and recommendations are done by officials, while councillors are forbidden by law to discuss such reports in advance of planning committee meetings.

Councillors voting on planning applications act in an individual quasi-judicial capacity and it's illegal for anyone to lobby them.

And planning decisions are often referred to third parties for final decision, such as structure plan committees or government ministers.

The notion that one person can control planning decisions is absurd.

When I was first an election candidate in Cathcart, I promised local people that I would work hard for them and I would never let them down.

Vox pop

Well, I'm still working hard for them, but they could be forgiven for thinking that I may have let them down.

But they don't. Of the dozen or so letters I have received on these matters from constituents, not one has asked me to resign as their MSP.

The local paper has just done a random vox pop on the streets of Cathcart and no one asked thinks I should resign. Quite the reverse.

My constituents are giving me the benefit of the doubt; I thank them for that and I apologise to them for this fuss.

I will deal with whatever arises from the Electoral Commission in due course.

Meantime I will stay on as Cathcart's MSP.

I will make no statement and give no interviews on these matters until further notice.
