Scotland 'raising events profile'
Commonwealth Games celebration
Glasgow now has seven years to gear up for the Games
Scotland is punching well above its weight on the world stage when it comes to hosting major events, according to a leading promoter.

Head of EventScotland Paul Bush said that securing both the Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup in 2014 had been a huge achievement.

However, Mr Bush warned Scotland must make the most of the opportunities.

It comes as the tourism industry has been told it must focus on visitors if plans to double revenues are to be met.

A 200m transformation will be needed for Glasgow to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games but it is hoped the return could be five-times that amount and the Ryder Cup could bring in 100m.

Mr Bush said the Games decision had been a breakthrough for the country.

He said: "Winning the Commonwealth Games in Sri Lanka just over 10 days ago has sent a strong message to the world that Scotland is serious on the international stage and we are punching well above our weight."

Meanwhile, VisitScotland has called on the sector to help meet the target of a 50% increase in revenues by 2015.

Chairman Peter Lederer urged businesses to see things from visitor's perspective.

He said: "Think about what they want. Ask yourself what you see.

"Our visitors want what we want. Clean streets to walk in and fresh air to breathe.

"They want quality products and great service in shops and restaurants and first class facilities throughout from public transport to public toilets."

The annual report for 2006/07 highlights the work carried out with 11,000 tourism businesses.

A number of successes from the past year are highlighted, including better than expected financial returns on its international, UK and Ireland marketing campaigns.

Details of an increase in the value of business tourism from 905m to 911m were outlined in the report.

It also found that raised awareness, accessibility and revenue had been created for the industry through increased use of visitscotland.com and other niche websites.
