| Friday, 31 March, 2000, 09:02 GMT 10:02 UK Green light for roads investment ![]() Upgrades, repairs and safety projects will go ahead The Scottish Executive has announced a 440m road spending and maintenance programme. The package, covering the next two years, represents a 22% increase in spending, according to Transport Minister Sarah Boyack. It will tackle upgrades, road repairs and safety measures for the Scottish trunk road network (see full list below). A total of 80m will be spent on five major projects to which the executive is already committed, including the dualling of the A1 between Haddington and Dunbar and the extension to the southern end of the M77 from Malletsheugh to Fenwick. A further 50m will pay for a programme of bridge repairs including the continuing work on the Kingston Bridge in Glasgow.
Essential maintenance and major structural repairs on some of the most heavily used parts of the Scottish road network like the Edinburgh City bypass and the M8 through Glasgow will account for another 200m. The executive believes the measures will benefit private motorists, the business community and public transport passengers alike. Ms Boyack said: "A properly maintained motorway and trunk road network is vital for Scotland. "We are committed to building an integrated transport system which meets our social and economic needs. This funding package is a major part of that pledge." Among the other beneficiaries of the announcement are Skye Bridge users, where a discount scheme and the freezing of tolls are planned. An A9 millennium cycle route is also on the agenda. Full list of projects: Strategic Roads Review major schemes
