Former enterprise minister Wendy Alexander has confirmed she will stand for the Labour leadership at Holyrood. She is the only declared candidate after two other key contenders, former health minister Andy Kerr and Margaret Curran, ruled themselves out.
Ms Alexander, MSP for Paisley North, said her party suffered a "bad defeat" at the hands of the SNP.
Former first minister Jack McConnell earlier announced his immediate resignation as Scottish Labour leader.
Ms Alexander said Labour had a "big challenge" to reform, reorganise and reconnect with Scottish voters.
Ms Curran, who served as minister for parliament in the last Scottish government, said she would support Ms Alexander to become the next leader.
"She is energetic, creative and determined, qualities which I believe the party needs at this time," said the Glasgow Baillieston MSP.
"I have known Wendy for more than 20 years. She is a passionate advocate of Labour values and has the vision and drive to ensure that Labour rises to meet the challenges that we face."
Mr Kerr, MSP for East Kilbride, said Labour's election defeat in May sent "some clear messages" to the party.
"How we react to that defeat and how we develop Labour values for Scotland today and in the years to come will determine where we find ourselves as a party and as a nation in the next decade and beyond," he said.
"The debate we need to have is about the future of Scotland and Labour.
"I intend to be part of that debate and I believe that the best way for me to do that is not as a leadership contender but as an active contributor to it."
Labour's procedures committee is to meet in the next couple of days to arrange the first stages of the process for selection of a new leader.
