Unemployment now is at an all-time low in Scotland
Record numbers of people are in work in Scotland and the unemployment rate is at an all-time low, according to the latest figures.

Data released by the Office for National Statistics shows an employment rate of almost 77%.

That is higher than the rest of the UK and almost all other countries within the EU.

In the three months to May this year there were more than 2.5 million people in work across Scotland.

'Ringing endorsement'

The employment rate rose to a new high of 76.7%.

Unemployment fell by 11,000 to 4.8%., the lowest figure since records began in 1992.

The number of people out of work and claiming Jobseeker's Allowance also dropped while levels of economic activity reached a new high in the last quarter.

Secretary of State for Scotland Des Browne said it was an exceptional set of results.

"With record numbers of people in Scotland in work, and with the unemployment rate never having been lower, these figures are a ringing endorsement of the social welfare policies delivered by this government," he said.
