Dairy farmers in picket promise
Farmers' picket
There were hold ups for several hours
Scotland's dairy farmers have promised to continue their protest against reductions in what they are paid to produce milk.

On Thursday evening around 30 farmers set up a blockade outside a supermarket depot in East Kilbride.

They brought traffic in and out of the Sainsbury centre to a standstill.

A third of dairy farmers across the country will be out of business if something is not done soon

Alex Wilson, dairy farmer
A spokesman for the dairy farmers, Alex Wilson, said supermarkets' milk pricing was forcing them out of business.

He said: "A third of dairy farmers across the country will be out of business if something is not done soon.

"I don't believe the public want to buy their milk from places like Ireland and Germany when the milk can be produced from inside their own country.

Past protests

"This is typical of what is happening to manufacturing, look at BMW - our industries are being destroyed."

The farmers have warned the blockade will be repeated if the supermarkets do not meet their demands.

Only last week, dairy producers protested outside the headquarters of the country's biggest milk distributor - Robert Wiseman Dairies in East Kilbride.

Demonstrators
Demonstrations have been held before
The firm has a 70% share of the Scottish milk market and has been accused of price discrimination and exclusive deals.

Farmers say they are getting 15p to 17p a litre for the milk produced on the farm. They say it costs them 19p to produce.

In turn, the same milk sells in shops for 77p a litre. The supermarkets argue that they are not profiting, but are using it as a "loss-leader" to attract customers.

The protest by Scottish farmers follows similar demonstrations in Wales, where dairy producers sprayed milk over the land and poured it down drains rather than sell it.
