| Thursday, 16 March, 2000, 07:20 GMT Lottery cash paves the way ![]() The Cuillins on Skye are a magnet for climbers Lottery money is to help preserve the fragile environment of two of Scotland's most heavily-visited mountain areas. The Heritage Lottery Fund is giving 240,000 to improve footpath access to the Cuillins of Skye, and mountain areas in Kintail. Six paths in the Cuillins, four in Kintail and one lowland route at Boveraig are to be restored in a project which aims to provide sustainable public access while protecting the mountain environment.
The aim of the grant is to reduce erosion of the most popular paths. At the moment, walkers attempt to bypass tricky areas on paths, leading to further erosion and scarring of the hillsides. Performance venue The Heritage Lottery Fund is also announcing grants to create a centre for studying Scottish music, and another to provide an exhibition on the history of Stirling. Dundee City Council will get 162,000 to establish the Wighton Heritage Centre, which will house the important traditional Scottish manuscripts and sheet music compiled by local grocer Andrew Wighton in the last century. The centre, which will be attached to the central library in Dundee , will allow public access to the works, and should provide a venue for performances.
The Heritage Lottery Fund's manager for Scotland, Colin McLean, said: "These grants show how diverse our heritage is, from the natural environment to the music of our ancestors. "We are delighted to be able to support these interesting projects which, while preserving our past, also bring it to life." The latest grants bring the total given out by the Heritage Lottery Fund in Scotland to 164m. |
