Some vulnerable people turn to loan sharks |
People with debt problems have been driven into the hands of illegal money lenders, according to the SNP. The Nationalists are expected to claim that Scottish ministers have forced the vulnerable deeper into trouble.
It is thought the SNP will use a Scottish Executive debate at Holyrood to promise to overturn recently introduced bankruptcy laws.
Ministers will highlight their current approach to tackling illegal money lenders on Thursday.
The present strategy involves the promotion of credit unions, more consumer support and improved policing.
However, the SNP will claim the recently passed Bankruptcy Bill, which will give creditors the right to seize a debtors home for unpaid debts of as little as 3,000, will heighten pressure on some groups.
They said an SNP-led executive would overturn the bill ensuring people could not lose their home over a debt which was less than half the average Scot's unsecured borrowing.
