Police target knife carriers

A collection of knives Police have vowed to clampdown on weapons

A high-profile clampdown against people carrying weapons and knives has seen 31 arrested by Strathclyde police in just 24 hours.

The drive, part of the force's ongoing Spotlight Initiative on Safer Streets, saw 16 weapons and 18 knives siezed.

One of the people stopped by police in Glasgow was an 11-year-old boy who will be reported to the children's panel.

The Strathclyde force area covers half of the population of Scotland and the operation was conducted across the force's nine divisions.

A 15-year-old boy has also been reported to the children's panel following an incident in Ayr where staff at a junior disco were allegedly threatened with a dog chain.

Another 15-year-old boy will be reported to the panel following an incident outside an off-licence in Glasgow where it is alleged he brandished a lock knife.

A 16-year-old male was arrested after a number of vehicles had been damaged - the 16-year-old has been charged with being in possession of a long bow and two 30 inch long metal arrows.

Assistant Chief Constable Jim Orr said: "These results show the determination with which we are tackling the problem of violent crime in this force area.

"Neither we nor the general public will tolerate having a tiny minority of individuals carrying knives or offensive weapons in our streets."

He added: "If any weapon carriers think they have escaped our attention this weekend, then I give them this warning - we will be back in even greater strength within the next days and weeks."
