Eastwood MP Jim Murphy has been appointed as the new Europe minister, Downing Street has announced. Mr Murphy, who previously worked a minister in the Department of Work and Pensions, takes over the role from Geoff Hoon.
The announcement was made as Gordon Brown put the finishing touches to his new government.
He is expected to bring a number of outsiders into the Cabinet to create a "government of all the talents."
