Lung disease families lobby MSPs
Diseased lung
Mesothelioma causes damage to the lungs
Families afflicted by a deadly form of lung cancer have taken their case for action to the Scottish Parliament.

Mesothelioma is particularly common on Clydeside and other areas where workers encountered asbestos in the shipyards.

Victims of the disease currently have to choose between claiming for damages or allowing their relatives to lodge a bigger claim after their death.

MSPs look set to back improved compensation rights which would allow both claims.

The new bill would amend the current law so that immediate family claims for non-financial loss are not blocked if a victim settles their own claim while still alive.

Corporate insurers, who would be liable, have accepted the change provided it only covers mesothelioma.
