What's your council's recycling policy?

All 32 Scottish councils have differing policies on recycling. Most collect garden waste, used glass bottles, paper, cardboard, and food and drink cans. But for many councils the policy is not uniform throughout due to funding issues and accessibility.

Edinburgh and East:

EAST LOTHIAN COUNCIL - There are three recycling centres and special uplifts are free to residents. Recyclate material is collected once a fortnight in urban areas but not in rural areas.

EDINBURGH CITY COUNCIL - The council area has three recycling centres with a fourth in the planning stages. A kerbside recycle collection takes place every week. Garden waste is collected fortnightly on a seasonal basis. Waste and recycling services differ depending on property type. Tenements receive a communal on-street bin service for recycling and refuse as opposed to individual wheelie bins and boxes.

FIFE COUNCIL - The council is moving towards a fortnightly collection of all kerbside household waste. There is currently a three bin system - one for garden waste, one for paper and one for residual waste. The council is in the process of rolling out its three bin fortnightly collection service across the full area with a completion date of September, 2007.

WEST LOTHIAN COUNCIL - The authority runs five community recycling centres and 31 other recycling sites. Doorstep collections cover paper, plastic bottles, cans and garden waste. Frome December 2006, dry recyclate will be collected fortnightly and garden waste will cease for the winter but will be collected every four weeks when it is reintroduced. The policy is the same throughout the area.

MIDLOTHIAN COUNCIL - About 76% of material is recycled in Scotland, a further 3% elsewhere in the UK and 21% abroad. The authority has two main recycling centres which take paper, glass, garden waste, cans, card and plastic bottles. Its policy is the same throughout.

Glasgow and West:

ARGYLL AND BUTE COUNCIL - The council has eight recycling centres and provides a doorstep recycling service for paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and cans. Recycle collections generally take place once a fortnight, but they can vary depending on the area.

EAST AYRSHIRE COUNCIL - There are two recycling centres and 25 recycling points in the council area. Paper, cardboard, glass bottles/jars, food cans, drink cans and garden waste are collected from the kerbside for recycling. There is a fortnightly collection for recyclate material. The policy is the same throughout the area.

EAST DUNBARTONSHIRE COUNCIL - The council recycles 77% of its waste in Scotland, a further 22% in the rest of the UK and about 1% overseas. There are 21 recycling sites and a large recycling centre at Bishopbriggs. Garden waste is collected fortnightly and other recyclate material is collected weekly. Some outlying rural areas and flatted properties do not have the recycling service.

EAST RENFREWSHIRE COUNCIL - All recyclate material is collected fortnightly with residual waste collected weekly. There are kerbside collections of paper, glass and aluminium cans. There is also a garden waste collection. There are restrictions to the service to some outlying areas due to operational difficulties.

GLASGOW CITY COUNCIL - There are four main recycling centres and an additional 320 public recycling points. Householders are provided with blue and brown wheeled bins. The blue bins are serviced once every four weeks the brown bins are serviced fortnightly on a seasonal basis. Blue and brown bins are provided to single properties. The council has now been provided with �27m to extend a tenement recycling service across the city.

NORTH AYRSHIRE COUNCIL - The authority has four recycling centres and 62 recycling points. There is a kerbside collection for a grey domestic bin, a brown garden waste bin, a black box for glass and a blue bag for paper. The grey bin is collected weekly, the brown bin collected weekly and the box and bag collected fortnightly. Householders in main towns and villages have the bin, box and bag. There is no collection in rural areas.

NORTH LANARKSHIRE COUNCIL - The authority processes 100% of its recyclate in the UK. There are six recycling centres and 200 banks at community bring sites. Kerbside collections of paper, glass and garden waste take place. Paper and glass are collected every four weeks and garden waste is collected fortnightly on a seasonal basis. The council has the same policy throughout its area.

RENFREWSHIRE COUNCIL - A fortnightly two box kerbside recycling scheme is in operation to 47,000 households. A green box is provided for glass cans and plastics and a blue box is provided for paper, cardboard and textiles. There is a weekly paper and cardboard recycling service provided to 20,000 tenement dwellers and a weekly mini-recycling service for maisonette and high flatted properties collecting paper, cardboard, mixed glass and mixed cans.

SOUTH AYSHIRE COUNCIL - The authority has four main recycling centres and 36 recycling points. Paper, cans, glass, cardboard, plastic bottle and garden waste is collected from the doorstep There is a blue wheeled bin collection once a month; garden waste is collected once a month and glass is collected in a black box fortnightly. The policy is the same throughout the council area.

SOUTH LANARKSHRIE COUNCIL - There are six civic amenity sites and 64 "bring sites" providing bottle and paper banks. Dry recyclables and mixed glass are collected fortnightly. Garden waste is collected on request, operating from April to October.

WEST DUNBARTONSHIRE COUNCIL - Some 30,000 homes are offered an alternate fortnightly collection of dry recyclate (plastic bottles, paper, cardboard and drink and food cans) and garden waste. Some 4,000 tenement/high flatted properties are offered a fortnightly collection of dry recyclate. There are 30 recycling centres at various points throughout the area and there are two household waste recycling centres.

INVERCLYDE COUNCIL - The authority has two recycling centres and 54 neighbourhood recycling points. There are blue bins for paper, cardboard, cans, plastics and textiles and a brown bin for garden waste. A fortnightly collection service is provided for recyclate material and the council policy is the same throughout the areas.

Highlands and Islands:

HIGHLAND COUNCIL - All material collected by the council is dealt with by merchants in Scotland. The area has 21 recycling centres. By November 2006, the council will be collecting paper, cans and green waste from 66,000 households. Green waste is collected one week and dry recyclate is collected the next. The kerbside recycling service is currently available to about 46% of Highland households. This will increase to about 67% by the end of the year.

WESTERN ISLES COUNCIL - The authority has 52 recycling points. There are blue boxes for glass and cans, Hessian sacks for paper, clear sacks for plastic and paper liners for organic material. The recyclate is collected on a fortnightly basis. The council's organics policy is the same throughout, but kerbside collections can vary.

North East/Northern Isles:

ABERDEEN CITY COUNCIL - Recyclate material is collected once a fortnight and flat dwellers are offered communal recycling facilities rather than a kerbside pick up. It has four main recycling centres. The council is implementing a 20 year waste and recycling plan and it recycles 70% of materials within Scotland and 100% within the UK.

ABERDEENSHIRE COUNCIL - The authority has a three R's policy - to reduce, reuse and recycle. Approximately 46% of waste is recycled in Scotland and 100% of waste is processed in the UK. The area has about 160 recycling centres, which includes mini recycling points. Recycled material is collected on a fortnightly basis in urban areas and rural properties receive a monthly paper recycling collection only.

MORAY COUNCIL - All recyclate material from the Moray area is processed in Scotland, although reprocessors may sell some materials on to destinations outside Scotland. The council has nine main recycling centres and 60 recycling points. Householders have blue boxes for cardboard, newspapers, office paper and magazines; orange boxes for glass bottles, aerosols, clean foil and food and drink cans, and brown bins for garden waste. The boxes are collected weekly and the bins collected fortnightly. Urban areas are served by the kerbside recycling, rural properties are not.

ORKNEY COUNCIL - All recyclate material is processed in the UK. Kerbside collections of glass and paper is collected on a fortnightly basis, garden waste is collected on a monthly basis over the summer months. Kerbside collections are restricted to the mainland. The isles are supplied with mini recycling centres.

SHETLAND ISLANDS COUNCIL - About 90% of recyclate material is processed in Scotland with 10% dealt with abroad. The area has 41 recycling centres which deal with glass, cans, paper and plastic bottles. There are fortnightly collections of recyclate. The kerbside collection is provided in two main towns.

South of Scotland:

DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY COUNCIL - The authority has 10 recycling centres and 147 recycling points across the region. There is a fortnightly kerbside collection for paper at more than 65,000 households in the area. Mixed waste is collected on a weekly basis and will be processed at either the Eco Deco or Galdenoch Composting plant, which will be operational by the end of November. These Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) plants will result in Dumfries and Galloway Council being able to meet and exceed the EU Landfill Directive biodegradable waste diversion targets.

SCOTTISH BORDERS COUNCIL - All recyclate material is dealt with in the UK. There are around 70 recycling points sited throughout the Borders. Paper, cardboard, cans, plastics and garden waste are collected on a weekly basis from the kerbside. Due to the large geographical area, funding to introduce kerbside garden waste collection to all households was not supported by the Scottish Executive. Agreement has been given to provide garden waste collections to about 70% of householders in urban areas. Rural households will be given a home compost bin.

Tayside and Central:

ANGUS COUNCIL - About 56% of the council's waste is recycled in Scotland and 95% processed in the UK. The authority has seven recycling centres in each burgh, plus 43 neighbourhood recycling points. Garden waste is collected fortnightly and other recyclate material is collected weekly. The policy is uniform throughout except for a small number of rural areas where kerbside collections are not possible.

CLACKMANNANSHIRE COUNCIL - The local authority says it does not measure what waste is recycled in its area, in Scotland or in the rest of the UK. It has 14 recycling centres, plus a large recycling unit at the civic amenity site. Recyclate material is collected weekly and garden waste collected fortnightly. The recycling policy is the same throughout the council area.

DUNDEE CITY COUNCIL - Just over 37,500 properties use a brown bin for garden waste, approximately 53,000 properties have a blue bin for the collection of paper and just over 15,000 have a green box for the collection of glass bottles/jars and aluminium cans and some plastic containers. Brown bins are collected fortnightly, blue bins are collected once every four weeks and green boxes are collected fortnightly. The authority has three recycling centres and its recycling policy is the same throughout.

FALKIRK COUNCIL - To date, the council is recycling or composting 34.17% of its waste. Of this figure most will be recycled in the UK, with paper and cardboard being recycled in England. About 5,000 properties in the council area have yet to be provided with a doorstep service. Recyclate material is collected fortnightly and brown bins for garden waste are collected on a seasonal basis.

PERTH AND KINROSS COUNCIL - The authority has eight recycling centres. Some 93% of recyclate is processed in Scotland and about 7% abroad. The council is set to roll out kerbside recycling schemes across the area after a successful pilot in some parts of Perth.

STIRLING COUNCIL - About 56% of material is recycled in Scotland and 98% is recycled in the UK. The council has 46 recycling points. There is a weekly kerbside collection for cans, glass HDPE plastic, textiles and paper. There is a fortnightly collection for garden waste and cardboard. The policy is the same throughout the area.
