Death inquiry anaesthetist barred
News image Dr Evans-Appiah has given evidence to the inquiry

The anaesthetist at a clinic where a 10-year-old boy died following a routine tooth extraction has been ordered not to practice until a hearing next year.

Doctor John Evans-Appiah has been barred until he goes before the General Medical Council's professional conduct committee.

Dr Evans-Appiah has given evidence to a fatal accident inquiry into the death of Darren Denholm, who failed to regain consciousness after a routine operation to remove a tooth in Edinburgh last year.

The ban is one of several restrictions imposed by the council's preliminary proceedings committee:

  • He must confine his work to general practice

  • He must not undertake any anaesthetic procedure

  • He should inform any employers, partners or agencies about the restrictions

  • He should notify the GMC before taking up any post.

Darren, who was 10 and lived in Armadale, West Lothian, went to the Peffermill Clinic to have a tooth out in October 1998.

Actions criticised

The inquiry into Darren's death at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, which is due to resume on Monday, has heard criticism of Dr Evans-Appiah's actions throughout the procedure.

One of the central issues has been Dr Evans-Appiah's role in the operation.

The Denholm family has welcomed the council's decision.

The fatal accident inquiry has also heard that the doctor was sacked from a previous job at a hospital in Falkirk after a Caesarean section operation went wrong
