The Scottish National Party's defence spokesman is to head its campaign for the 2007 Holyrood election. Angus Robertson's appointment came after he successfully led the Moray by-election campaign, which saw the SNP's biggest ever majority.
The announcement was made to the party's election candidates at a meeting in Perth on Sunday.
The Moray MP said all the evidence showed the SNP was the only party capable of beating Labour next year.
Strong campaigns
SNP leader Alex Salmond said the party was "neck and neck" with Labour 11 months ahead of polling.
"We aim to capitalise on this momentum to win the additional 20 first-past-the-post seats we need to secure victory for the SNP, and Angus Robertson has the skills and experience to do just that," he said.
Mr Robertson said: "The SNP enter this fight from an increasingly strong position.
"We have the best electoral record in Scotland in the past year, winning local and parliamentary by-elections up and down Scotland, often against strong campaigns in traditional Labour heartlands such as Glasgow, Fife and Midlothian."
