Stem cell research, sectarianism and the blessing of same sex partners are to be discussed at the general Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

The assembly's new moderator, the Rev Alan McDonald, will suggest the Orange Order and Republicans join forces and march through the streets of Scotland.

He plans to visit India and Africa this year but is due to say he believes poverty is a problem closer to home.

The assembly, which began on Saturday, is also set to discuss nuclear weapons.

The start of the week-long gathering was heralded by a 21-gun salute at Edinburgh Castle.
