John Corrigan will be responsible for security across Scotland |
A senior police officer will be appointed to tackle terrorism and strengthen security across Scotland. Strathclyde Police Assistant Chief Constable John Corrigan is expected to be appointed to the new post once Scottish Executive funding is secured.
Mr Corrigan has been working with the Metropolitan Police on a review of national security since the London bombings on 7 July last year.
A report said he would be responsible for "strengthening" security.
Mr Corrigan has 30 years' service and was previously assistant chief constable for crime with Scotland's largest force.
Confirmation 'imminent'
He will retain responsibility for special branch within the force.
Strathclyde Police Chief Constable Willie Rae said the Scottish Executive had "indicated verbally" that funding would be made available.
He added that confirmation in writing was "imminent".
Ministers are being asked to meet 60% of Mr Corrigan's salary and all of his expenses.
