3m investment to improve housing
Council houses
The improvement programme will create 30 jobs
A multi-million pound drive to improve council housing in Perth and Kinross has been launched.

More than 3m is being invested by the local council to replace obsolete windows and doors and bring properties up to required housing standards.

The improvements to 1,280 houses will be taken forward in partnership with local building company Sidey Ltd.

Perth and Kinross Council is aiming to achieve the Scottish Housing Quality Standard by 2015.

Council housing and health vice convener Peter Barrett said: "This programme of works is a significant investment for the council but one which is extremely worthwhile.

"We are committed to providing good quality, affordable housing for our tenants.

"While a maximum spend of over 3,000,000 is a significant amount, we expect the windows and doors to have a life of over 20 years and the quality guarantee covers a period of 10 years."

Tendering exercise

The council said Sidey Ltd was appointed following a thorough tendering exercise to achieve the best quality and price.

Sidey chairman Michael Dobson said: "We achieved over 90% tenant satisfaction rate on the last window and door partnership with Perth & Kinross Council in 2003.

"On winning this new partnership 30 more sustainable jobs will be put in place adding to our existing 200 employees."

The programme, which starts on 17 April, is expected to finish in spring 2007.
