The Mither Kirk will be used for community events |
An historic city church is set for a facelift as part of a 5m project with the help of lottery funding. The cash boost will allow Aberdeen's Kirk of St Nicholas, known as the Mither Kirk, to create a concert venue, community meeting room and a cafe.
The project is being led by church members, Aberdeen City Council and a development board of business people.
Around 700,000 is expected from the Heritage Lottery Fund and other charities but 2.7m is still needed.
Church members and the council have jointly contributed 1.4m to the project.
'New beginning'
Chairman of the development board, David Paton, said The Mither Kirk was seeking to be "at the centre of life in Aberdeen once more".
He added: "Although a notable building, the Kirk has become hidden and is unknown to generations of Aberdonians.
"We want to breathe new life into this ancient building, filled with treasures, and give it a new beginning.
"It will be very good for the community, the place will have a buzz."
Many of the original features such as stained glass will be restored as part of the project once the fundraising campaign has all the necessary finance in place.
