Gigha gets green social housing
Gigha
The houses on Gigha will be energy efficient
The community-owned island of Gigha has unveiled its first social housing for 50 years.

Eight families have been allocated the first completed properties and a further 10 houses are planned.

The houses are fitted out with the most up-to-date green energy features and have been paid for by Scottish Executive-run Communites Scotland.

Another 10 houses are planned as part of the development around the island's main settlement of Ardminish.

The Gigha Heritage Trust was set up four years ago when islanders took control of the island after raising 4m.

Since the community buyout two years ago, the population increased by nearly 25% to 121. The number of pupils at the school rose to 13.

Those living on the island, off the west coast of Scotland, also launched six new firms.
