Galashiels top for bond winnings

Galashiels has gone to the top in the winnings league
Galashiels has emerged as the luckiest place in Scotland for people scooping Premium Bond prizes.

The Borders town came top in the country in terms of the total value of prizes won between March 2005 and February this year.

It is a big turnaround for Galashiels which came out bottom in a similar study 12 months ago.

This time around, it was Perth's turn to be named the unluckiest place in the country for major wins.

Sally Swait, Premium Bonds manager at National Savings and Investments, said: "Congratulations to Galashiels, though every Premium Bond in Scotland has an equal chance of winning a prize."

"While some places like Galashiels and Motherwell have been luckier than others in the past year, there is no reason why places like Kilmarnock and Perth won't be the luckiest next year."

In Scotland more than 1.6 million people own Premium Bonds worth over 1.4bn.

More than 24,000 prizes worth over 1.4m remain unclaimed with no time limit on claims being made.
