The team will plan the move of its headquarters from Queen Margaret Drive in Glasgow to Pacific Quay by the River Clyde.

Strategy and Development Executive Iain Marley, who returns to BBC Scotland from Radio 4, will lead the project and work in partnership with Ken Cargill, who will move from his current role as Head of News and Current Affairs.

Mr Cargill will represent the production community and will ensure that the overall strategy - and the buildings - are informed by programme makers' needs and aspirations.

Mr Marley and Mr Cargill, who will work directly to the Scottish Management Board, will be joined by other team members from broadcast and resources in due course as BBC Scotland prepares to draw up detailed requirements based on developing business needs for the new millennium.

The appointments were welcomed by BBC Scotland Controller John McCormick.

He said: "Pacific Quay will be the culmination of an immense period of change for BBC Scotland.

"The project's next stage involves drawing up detailed requirements based on our developing needs for the new millennium, defining the overall strategy for every part of our operation.

"This is essential if the new premises are to be flexible enough to accommodate our changing demands over the next 20 years - and beyond."

Mr McCormick welcomed the two appointments.

'Technological change'

"Iain played a significant role in managing change both in Radio Scotland and then at Radio 4, while Ken has led BBC Scotland's journalism through a major process of development and technological change.

"They will make a formidable team and will ensure that we are well positioned to benefit from the transition to the digital age," said Mr McCormick.
