Free prescription plea is backed
Anders Gibson
Anders Gibson wants MSPs to back his call for free prescriptions
A call from a cystic fibrosis sufferer to make the life-threatening condition exempt from prescription charges has received backing from Alex Neil MSP.

The SNP MSP for Central Scotland has tabled a motion calling on the Scottish Executive to add the condition to the chronic conditions exemptions list.

He responded to a plea from sufferer Anders Gibson, 27, from Glasgow.

The cost is estimated at 10,000 a year. An executive consultation on charging in chronic cases is under way.

Mr Neil said: "It's a small amount to pay for what is fair and right."

He added: "Cystic fibrosis is a serious illness. I hope the health minister takes cognisance and MSPs sign the motion."

'Long-overdue'

Anders Gibson said he was "very grateful" that Mr Neil had put forward the motion.

He said: "His support on this issue is extremely important to people with cystic fibrosis.

"The economic cost endured by someone with such a serious condition appears unfair.

"My hope is that the motion receives strong cross-party support, the addition of cystic fibrosis to the medical exemption list is long overdue."

A three-month consultation on charges was launched in January.
