The council fears it could have to pay back 600,000
Dumfries and Galloway Council has been told to prepare itself to pay back up to 600,000 to the elderly people it charged for the preparation of food.

Education and community services chairman Willie Scobie called for an urgent report into the subject.

It has been claimed that a number of Scottish councils have wrongly charged old folk for food preparation.

Mr Scobie asked for a report to be prepared into how much the authority might be liable to pay back.

"I think this council needs to look at how culpable it is," he said.

'Recognise responsibilities'

"I want an early report back on this 600,000, I won't brush it below the carpet.

"I am asking for the report to recognise the responsibilities and culpability that this council and this committee may have."

The Scottish Executive has said that elderly people should not be charged for food preparation.

The Convention of Scottish Local Authorities, however, has claimed that there remains some confusion about the situation.
