Elderly 'losing out' on benefits
Pensioner
Elderly people are failing to claim all the benefits they are entitled to
Almost a quarter of a million Scottish pensioners are failing to claim council tax benefits they are entitled to, according to the SNP.

The party said figures from the Department of Work and Pensions showed more than 218,000 Scottish pensioners failed to claim the benefit annually.

The SNP's John Swinney said roughly four out of ten pensioners were losing out on about 500 each year.

He said replacing council tax with an income tax would solve the problem.

A spokesman for the Scottish Executive said that an independent review of local government finance was currently looking at a whole range of issues.

He added that a report was due to go before ministers shortly.
