Modern homes will be built on the site of the two tower blocks |
Two tower blocks in Glasgow's Gorbals district have been demolished in a controlled explosion. The landmark buildings at Old Rutherglen Road and Cumberland Street were razed to the ground on Sunday, as part of an ongoing revamp of the area.
New Gorbals Housing Association said the multi-storey flats were poorly constructed and would have cost too much to improve.
The housing organisation intends to build 100 modern homes on the site.
New Gorbals Housing Association director Fraser Stewart said: "The flats might be ready to go but that doesn't mean to say people haven't had great lives in these flats and they've got great memories of them.
"But it was time for these particular flats to come down.
"We're delighted to be able to do a lot of new build which will be cheaper to heat, better to live in and better for the community generally."
