Fife police are campaigning for safer neighbourhoods
Police in Fife have tracked down more than 600 people with warrants outstanding in a major crackdown.

The offences involved included not turning up for court appearances and failing to pay fines.

The initiative, carried out over the last three months, has been part of the constabulary's Time2Act safer neighbourhoods campaign.

A spokesman said 624 of Fife's "most wanted" had been traced by a dedicated team of officers.

Warrants are issued by the police when people have consistently failed to appear in court.

The execution of these warrants at home or in the workplace can be humiliating

They can also be executed against anyone who has not kept up with payments on their court fines.

Ch Supt Jim Rodden said experience had shown that when offenders were not brought to court they can continue to commit crimes.

He said: "The execution of these warrants at home or in the workplace can be humiliating for those being arrested, but that enforcement is the last stage of the process after attempts to get people to pay fines or surrender themselves have been exhausted.

"I would ask those wanted on warrant to consider making arrangement to pay fines or surrender themselves at a police station - as this will be the only opportunity to influence where and when we execute warrants."
