Ministers are promising a review of care procedures

The Scottish Executive has been reviewing support given to families where drugs are a problem.

Academics estimate there are 50,000 children in Scotland who have been exposed to drug addiction at home.

A girl from Glasgow was taken to hospital last week when she collapsed in school after smoking heroin.

Ministers have expressed concern that too many youngsters are living with drugs before action is taken to help them.

During First Minster's Questions (FMQs), Jack McConnell said more must be done by communities and social work services to tackle the drug problem

Under the plans being considered, not all children of addicts would be removed from their homes but the number would rise.

It was reported that the Glasgow primary school pupil had regularly smoked heroin.

The girl, who has not been named, slumped at her desk during a class in the school in the east end. She was taken to hospital for treatment.

Glasgow City Council said it was shocked by the case, while Scottish National Party Holyrood leader Nicola Sturgeon said it was not an isolated incident.

She accused Mr McConnell of being unaware of gaps in drugs education in schools following an exchange at FMQs.

Ms Sturgeon said: "Jack McConnell revealed that he is clearly not aware of the situation on the ground in schools across Scotland.

"A number of reports in recent years have highlighted the need for increased training on drugs awareness for teachers.

"The first minister's complacency is wholly unjustified. He should get hold of the facts and make dedicated funding available to improve teacher training on drugs awareness for schools throughout Scotland."
