Average starting salaries for graduates have hit �20,000 for the first time in Scotland, according to a study. Research from the Association of Graduate Recruiters suggests that the bigger firms are having to pay more in order to fill increasing vacancies.
The biggest shortages are in professions including law, banking, IT and engineering.
Most vacancies were in accountancy. Firms are also having to compete with salaries in England.
More than half of all graduate vacancies are in London and the south east of England.
This has tempted graduates south along with the higher salaries on offer.
Graduates in London top the pay scales, earning an average of �26,500 a year.
The lowest rates were in Scotland and Wales. Welsh recruits start on about �18,000 per annum.
Research for the survey took place during June 2005 using an online questionnaire.
