Borders tax set to rise by 4.4%
Council tax bill
Scottish Borders Council is proposing a 4.4% increase
Home owners in the Borders are facing a 4.4% increase in their council tax bills in the spring.

Scottish Borders Council's ruling Independent-Conservative alliance has tabled its budget proposals.

The rise translates to about 58p a week on a band A property, rising to 1.73 for a band H home.

Council leader David Parker described the measures as "a budget which protects vital local services in a very difficult year".

The authority said it had attempted to balance the need for prudence with the requirement to keep frontline services running.

Mr Parker pointed out that two thirds of council tax payers in the region were in bands A, B and C and so would feel a lesser impact than those in band D, which is the most commonly quoted figure.

He added: "What we also must remember is that it is the second lowest council tax increase in Scottish Borders Council's history.

"I think that shows you we are committed to keeping the level of council tax increase down but we simply couldn't keep it down to the 2.5% which was recommended by some people."
