Objections lodged to postal plan
Dumfries post office
Dumfries post office has been earmarked for closure
An 8,000-name petition has been sent to Post Office managers against plans to close their main Dumfries branch.

The consultation period on the proposals to move services to the Spar store in the town's Whitesands comes to an end on Tuesday.

Signatures have been gathered outside the Great King Street premises since the scheme was announced.

Offices in Bathgate, Coatbridge, Dunfermline, Perth and Hope Street in Glasgow are also in line to move.

Dumfries MSP Dr Elaine Murray confirmed that the petition had been sent to both Post Office Ltd and postal watchdog Postwatch.

"I am certain that they will lose a lot of business if they insist on pressing ahead," said Dr Murray.

Post Office Ltd plans to franchise services and relocate them in shops run by the Spar chain, in some cases just yards away.

The company said when they made the announcement that there would be no loss of service as a result of the changes, which would also mean longer opening hours.
