In quotes: G8 summit
Quotes on the day world leaders fly into Scotland for the G8 summit and violence flares in parts of central Scotland.

GILL HUBBARD, G8 ALTERNATIVES

Reacting to the police's decision to cancel the protest march near Gleneagles.

This is a serious indictment of British democracy. The prime minister should tell us why the police have banned a peaceful march and denied thousands of people the right to protest.

Speaking after the ban decision was reversed, she said.

I'm sure all of you will agree that this would have been a travesty of democracy if we were not allowed to protest against the warmongers.

We're on this side of the fence, they're on that side of the fence. Which side are people on? The people of Scotland are on our side, we are going to march and we are delighted about that.

SYLVIA JACKSON, LABOUR MSP FOR STIRLING

I condemn the dreadful scenes that I have seen on the TV this morning.

It has been very co-ordinated and the police have been very stretched but it looks as if they are getting things under control.

Dr Jackson said that protesters were trying to disrupt both the rail and road networks in Central Scotland.

I think the police have been very stretched and they are working well to get things in order.

The police have been working very hard in order to have everything co-ordinated but I think they have been slightly caught unawares this morning.

We must condemn that small number of protesters who have been trying very hard to cause chaos.

CHIEF CONSTABLE PETER WILSON, G8 POLICE CO-ORDINATION CENTRE

We have a large and dedicated team of officers working 24 hours a day to make sure that relatives are informed of any injuries to police officers.

We are also working with representatives from the police federations of both Scotland and England and Wales to make sure that they have the latest information.

I would like to emphasise, however, that injuries are few and minor just now. I know that dramatic television pictures may cause fear and alarm but please be assured that we will keep on top of all the latest information.

FIRST MINISTER JACK McCONNELL

It is a great honour in post-devolution Scotland to be welcoming the leaders of the G8 countries to Prestwick today.

I am determined to make sure that they feel as welcome as possible and that they leave Scotland at the end of this week with enough information and enough memories of our small country to ensure that they want to return.

We want to ensure that the issues that face the people of Africa every day - not just on Thursday or Friday of this week but every single day of their lives - that those issues remain to the fore and the leaders leave Scotland on Friday having made a little bit of history on our soil.

BOB GELDOF

How do you compare the people here - dignified and respectful - with the people who have no real political agenda?

OSAMA SAEED, MUSLIM ASSOCIATION OF BRTAIN

Meeting as they are behind maximum security, watchtowers and layers of fencing, you would think that the G8 leaders were being held in Guantanamo Bay style conditions, which some of them more than others certainly deserve to be.

Instead they will discuss in complete opulence their profoundly undemocratic ruling of the world. We believe that the rulers of the world should change drastically, because under their stewardship it is only becoming a more dangerous, unjust and polluted place.

REV ARTHUR CHRISTIE, MONKTON AND PRESTWICK NORTH CHURCH

We, in Prestwick, welcome the arrival in Scotland of the leaders of the world's most powerful nations.

We have placed on every one of our nine churches a Make Poverty History banner in the hope that the leaders might see them, and know of our concern for the poor of the world.

We urge you to keep the issues of the Make Poverty History campaign at the top of the agenda at Gleneagles and we look forward to a future where we have trade justice and not free trade

Our hopes and the hopes of millions of poor people in Africa and elsewhere in the world, rest on you.
