Cases are increasing among the under-24s in Scotland
The number of people being diagnosed with HIV in Scotland rose to another record high last year.

Figures showed that there were 406 new cases recorded during 2005, with more than half of those acquiring their infection within Scotland.

It is thought the increase could be partly due to routine HIV testing at sexual health clinics.

However, there are fears that a rise in sexually transmitted diseases suggests more people are having unsafe sex.

Of those who acquired HIV in Scotland, the majority were homosexual men.

A rise was also reported in the number of cases among the under-24s.

Doctors fear that this could be the start of a new outbreak among this age group, which has rising rates of all kinds of sexually transmitted diseases.
