A 16.5m state-of-the-art leisure complex for Dumfries and Galloway has been given the green light.

Work is due to start on the project in a matter of weeks after it got the all clear from the Scottish Executive.

The building, to be sited at Hoods Loaning in Dumfries, is expected to be complete by autumn 2007.

The complex will include a national competition size swimming pool, multi-purpose sports hall and 1,200-seater event venue.

The news has been welcomed by Dumfries and Galloway Council which will work on the project with contractor Kier Northern.

'Design right'

Council convener, Andrew Campbell, said: "This is great news for everyone in Dumfries and Galloway and the council.

"We are now at a stage that within weeks we will see building works start and the complex begin to take shape. It was important that the council got the design of the complex right.

"We wanted something that looks good when it is built and continues to look good in years to come.

"I am confident we have got the design right and it is encouraging that we are still on time to see it open late 2007."
