By-election to be held next month

Rachel Squire was elected as an MP in 1992
The Dunfermline and West Fife by-election, following the death of Labour MP Rachel Squire, will be held on Thursday, 9 February.

It will be Scotland's second by-election this parliamentary session.

Ms Squire, who had an 11,562 majority, died a fortnight ago after a long battle against cancer.

Willie Rennie will stand for the Liberal Democrats while Douglas Chapman will represent the SNP. Other parties have yet to confirm their candidates.

The turnout for Dunfermline and Fife West at the last general election was 59.90%.

The results were: Rachel Squire (Lab) 20,111 (47.44%); David Herbert (Lib Dem) 8,549 (20.17%); Douglas Chapman (SNP) 8,026 (18.93%); Roger Smillie (C) 4,376 (10.32%); Susan Archibald (Scottish Socialist Party) 689 (1.63%) and Ian Borland (UKIP) 643 (1.52%).
