Judges are among those discussing the justice system |
Judges, lawyers and academics from across the world are discussing international co-operation between various criminal justice systems. At the conference in Edinburgh on Tuesday they are due to examine the relationships between prosecution and police authorities.
Scotland's experience in helping to tackle crimes abroad is among the items on the agenda.
Representatives from 40 countries are attending the four-day conference.
Scotland's Crown agent Norman McFadyen is chairing the session at the International Society for the Reform of Criminal Law.
Staff in the Crown Office's international co-operation unit are in regular contact with criminal justice partners throughout the world.
Apart from dealing with extradition cases, they also form the contact between Scottish victims and witnesses to foreign crimes and the appropriate authority abroad.
Mr McFadyen said: "In today's world, when crime is international, our response to it must be international as well.
"Scottish authorities are always anxious to help their foreign counterparts in appropriate cases.
"International co-operation also includes the extradition process, where individuals wanted in another country can be arrested and surrendered subject to suitable safeguards."
