 The Tay Road Bridge cost �6m to build |
Work is set to start after a �16m contract to refurbish the Tay Road Bridge was awarded to leading design firm Cleveland Bridge. The project, which includes replacing bearings on the structure, is expected to last for two years.
The company said the crossing between Dundee and Fife would remain fully functional during that time.
The 1.4 mile long bridge was designed by William Fairhurst. It cost �6m to build and was opened in 1966.
The refurbishment contract was awarded by the Tay Road Bridge Joint Board, which is responsible for the structure's management and maintenance.
Cleveland Bridge managing director Brian Rogan said: "The Tay Road Bridge is a vital commuter link from Fife to the heart of Dundee and it is also one of the gateways to the Scottish Highlands, making it integral to the country's tourism industry.
"Dundee is a working port, so maintaining the infrastructure will be a key part of our brief."
