The Tories want a fuller picture on drug rehabilitation |
The Conservatives have challenged the Scottish Executive to publish a full list of drug rehabilitation services north of the border. The party has argued that there should be access to a comprehensive directory of rehabilitation facilities.
The Scottish Executive has produced statistics indicating that there are about 300 drug services in Scotland.
But Scottish Tory leader Annabel Goldie said information is needed on what they are and how they are being used.
She said: "We must also ask how robust this information is, considering that when I recently raised the matter at first minister's questions, Jack McConnell didn't have a clue.
"Does this figure include all available capacity in the voluntary and charitable sector?
"There are many excellent organisations who put in such effort to help those desperately in need.
"The executive needs to come forward now with policies that address the dreadful current predicament we are in, rather than pursuing their management agenda."
The executive conceded that there were "gaps" in the information available centrally but details of services could be found at the website of the publicly-funded Scottish Drug Forum and the Know the Score online site.
A spokeswoman said an extra 6m in funding had been made available in the current financial year meaning a total of 32.5m available for drug treatment
She said 4m of the extra money was for the expansion of local services.
"This will provide access to treatment services for an additional 2,600 clients," the spokeswoman added.
"Drug addiction is a serious problem in Scotland, and all politicians have a responsibility to discuss the matter seriously.
"It does a disservice to users, their families and the wider community to pretend there are quick and easy solutions.
"Only a comprehensive strategy that embraces prevention and education with treatment and rehabilitation and strong, effective enforcement will work in the long run."
