Overall there was a slight increase in drivers caught |
A learner driver is among more than 200 motorists caught over the drink drive limit in the first week of Scotland's festive road safety campaign. A total of 201 drivers were found to be intoxicated while behind the wheel or refused to give a breath test, according to police figures.
This is up from 188 for the same period last year.
The learner and the man instructing her were stopped in Carnoustie, Angus, in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Tayside officers stopped the woman after spotting her driving erratically. She was also driving without insurance or L plates.
The Strathclyde and Lothian and Borders forces showed a slight fall compared to the same period last year.
There were 26 people found over the alcohol limit in Lothian and Borders, four fewer than last year, while in Strathclyde the figure fell by seven to 87.
These included a 20-year-old drunk-driver stopped in Glasgow who already had three cases pending for drink-driving and a 28-year-old woman stopped in Ayr who was found to be almost four times the legal limit.
Chief Constable John Vine, of the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland, said some people never learned.
He said: "It never ceases to amaze me that despite all the publicity we have had for many, many years over the dangers of drinking and taking drugs before driving that some people still think it is acceptable.
"The consequences of driving under the influence of drink or drugs cannot be overstated.
"Our message to anybody thinking about this is that if you drink or take drugs and drive we will catch you."
