Airports traffic breaks milestone

Stornoway airport is one of the 10 operated by HIAL
The number of passengers travelling on scheduled flights via airports in the Highlands and Islands has broken through the one million mark.

A total of 1,015,657 people used the 10 airports during the year to March, 9% up on the previous 12 months.

Inverness, Kirkwall, Sumburgh and Stornoway handled 90% of the total passengers. Inverness recorded the fastest growth rate.

The number of flights during the year rose by 2% to 82,764.

Bob Macleod, managing director of Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd (HIAL), said: "The performance during the year emphasises the vital role that air services and airports play in the region and the increasing use of scheduled flights by people wishing to travel for business, leisure or social welfare reasons."

HIAL also operates airports at Barra, Benbecula, Campbeltown, Islay, Tiree and Wick.

The figures quoted by by the company exclude oil industry flights in Shetland.
